Roadster Fans Holding Out Hope For Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky Models
There are a lot of smaller stories to tell coming out of the main story of General Motors' painful restructuring. Most of them are well known - union workers losing their jobs, white collar staff axed, dealerships closing and several brands facing a likely demise. But, there are many lesser known stories that don't get the attention that they deserve for the simple reason that they impact a smaller group of people. In the media, numbers drive the news business which is why current owners of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters are not getting the attention that they deserve.
Roadster Enthusiasts Left Out In The Cold
Why is it important for Sky and Solstice enthusiasts to have their voices heard? Because, both models are facing GM's ax as their respective brands are closed down or sold off. True, GM could move these attractive models over to another division as both Buick and Chevrolet dealers would love to call these cars their own. However, given GM's current economic plight, allowing these models to die seems to be the only approach unless another automaker makes a bid for the Wilmington, Delaware factory that builds these cars.
The Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are essentially the same car with slightly different exterior styling. The Solstice was introduced for the 2006 model year while the Sky arrived for the 2007 model year. Opel and Daewoo versions of the car are also being sold, expanding the roadster's reach to several important markets. And one important word of note concerning the Solstice - a hard top targa version became available with the 2009 model year, a point of distinction exclusive to that model.
After Production Comes To A Halt
For owners of any orphan car, the quest to maintain their rides long after production has ceased becomes ever more challenging as the years pass by. For Solstice and Sky owners, they'll have a global network to tap which includes Opel GT and Daewoo G2X owners, but eventually it'll be become more difficult to source needed parts. On the other hand, having a distinct roadster that was only built for a few brief years can work to the owner's advantage as resale prices will eventually hit bottom and for customized versions of these cars they could quickly rebound.
But all may not be lost for Sky and Solstice fans as GM has said that they are open to selling the Wilmington plant that produces these cars. Any number of companies could be interested in the roadster line, but the best bet would be an automaker who doesn't have a US presence yet such as one from China. Or, if the right offer came forth GM could sell the dyes, moldings, parts and related material needed to build the cars, allowing future models to be built overseas.
It may be a few more months before the final fate of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are known. Meanwhile, enthusiasts will be consoling themselves through online message boards, meet ups and other fan gatherings in a bid keep the fire lit for their favorite rides.

Remote Car Starters
James Bond had it, now you want it. A remote car starter allows a driver to turn-on the ignition of his car from a distance. Sure, maybe it's not on your 007 wristwatch, but there are a number of solutions out there from companies like Crimestopper, Audiovox, Directed, Viper, and Python.
So what can you do with these remote engine starters? The primary purpose for remote starters is convenience. You could warm up your car that is out in frigid weather while you're staying warm indoors. You could also do the same in blistering hot weather; remotely turn-on your engine with the A/C switch on so that it's nice and cool by the time you get in. Another purpose for remote ignition is security reasons. Whether you're a male or a female, it's always nice to have your car ready to go whenever you are, especially when you are in shady parts of town. And of course, the last purpose to having remote starters is the show-off factor because it completes the true wow-element of your vehicle. After all, who doesn't want to show off like James Bond?
There are a few things to be mindful of. Virtually every remote car start kit includes vehicle security and of course with that, they include some kind of remote. The pricing on these remote start security systems depend mostly on the abilities of the remote. I know it sounds crazy, but it's the truth. In essence, the price is based upon how smart your system is.
The more buttons the remote has, the more money it'll cost, because the more buttons usually mean more programmable functions such as keyless entry, arm/disarm, delayed starts, valet mode, and multi-tone activation. Another consideration is the ability for the system to communicate 2-way rather than just the typical 1-way. Think of your remote as your pager. 2-Way remotes allow the system to not only be controlled remotely by the user but also communicate to the user any disturbance to the car. This is crucial if you're dining out or shopping at the mall and your car is out of your sight. 2-Way remotes typically features a small LCD display to tell you exactly what's going on and they usually have obvious indicators to represent different things on your car that is disturbed (if your car is equipped with the sensors). Some systems indicate glass-breakage indicators or vicinity alarms to specify exact disturbances.
Another crucial aspect to consider is of course the range of your remote. Please remember that just because a product say that they feature a max range of 6000ft. means it's always going to be consistently 6000ft. Conditions would have to be perfect to reach that kind of consistency and range. The longest range I've heard anyone had for these systems is around 1500ft. that's about Ľ of a mile. This is great range for you since you could walk around for Ľ mile and not have to worry about your precious car.
Lastly, remember that once you wire your vehicle up for remote ignition, it is possible for thieves to steal your remote's code and frequency allowing them to impersonate you through their remote and driving off with your car. Though the possibility of this is unlikely, it is still possible. Some systems feature code-hopping countermeasures, allowing your system to change codes frequently to prevent thieves from finding the same exact code your system use for arming and disarming the system-giving an astronomically impossible combination of codes to be deciphered. Again with this added feature, expect the price to be higher.
In summary, I would suggest that you find a remote car starter system that is adequate for your needs. If you do want features, keep in mind that for each additional feature, there will be additional costs. I hope I have helped you in your decision making process. Good luck!

Rumored – Saturn Sky Death Imminent
General Motors launched a set of **** roadsters a few years back under the Saturn and Pontiac banners. The Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice along with the Opel GT and Daewoo G2X were developed to bring excitement to each brand, two-seat rear wheel drive sports models with a flair for styling.
Alas, the fortunes of the Saturn Sky and its siblings appears to be coming to a quick end. GM Inside News, an independent voice that analyzes the big automaker, is hinting that the Sky will be no more, exiting the scene in the very near future.
Let's take a look at the reasons why the Sky will likely be no more:
Too Expensive To Build - The Sky's Kappa II platform is too expensive to build. In fact, if reports are correct, the automaker is losing at least $10,000 on each vehicle sold. Never a significant seller, the Sky is an attractive and fun model, but trails the Mazda MX-5 Miata in most rankings.
GM Is Bleeding Cash - General Motors is bleeding through cash this year, at a rate much higher than they thought possible at the beginning of the year. With gas prices topping $4 per gallon, the automaker is scrambling to switch over to a fuel efficient fleet, trimming low performing and expensive inventory in the process.
High Gas Prices Have Changed Everything - In times past when GM could absorb the losses on the Sky, Solstice, GT, and G2X, lower gas prices kept demand for its profitable SUVs and big pickup trucks high. These bigger vehicles are the most profitable for GM and could offset the loss from selling the little roadsters. No more. With sales plummeting, GM has few golden models to rely upon to bolster its line up of loss leading, image roadsters.
Though the Sky isn't a pig on fuel, cash strapped consumers who can still afford a new car are going with much more fuel efficient and practical models. In heady economic times a roadster would sell, but these times are anything but that.
It is unfortunate to hear that the Sky, Solstice, GT, and G2X will be cut, but given the fortunes of General Motors, it seems to be a wise decision from a business point of view.

2007 Saturn SKY: The Wait Is Over
After months of nonstop hype, the 2007 Saturn SKY is now entering dealer showrooms. This two seat roadster marks an important turning point for the Saturn brand long identified with building nondescript, but dependable vehicles. With an MSRP of $23,690, the SKY is certain to sell for several thousand dollars over the dealer's sticker price as demand is expected to far exceed capacity. Let's examine the Saturn brand and the car behind the hype to see if the SKY was worth the wait.
Since Saturn's first cars became available in 1990, the brand has attracted a loyal following of owners who liked the company's simplicity and consumer friendly dealer network. Indeed, Saturn's "no haggle" pricing revolutionized the relationship between dealer and customer changing the typical adversarial business transaction into a partnership benefiting buyer and seller alike.
Originally, Saturn was established as a separate company, but wholly owned by General Motors. The idea behind Saturn was that the company would build import fighting small cars to compete against the likes of Toyota and Honda. The S-Series, made with "ding proof" polymer side panels was an immediate hit and Saturn relied exclusively on this line of compact coupes, sedans, and wagons for nearly a decade before a second, larger model was introduced.
The dream of keeping Saturn separate from GM eventually died and the brand was brought into the GM fold to be managed much like Chevrolet, Buick, etc. are today. Indeed, the Spring Hill, Tennessee factory, which was exclusively designed to build Saturn vehicles remains in business, but many of the division's cars are now being built elsewhere including the SKY.
So, the SKY has caught your attention, has it? Who could blame you? Pictures of the SKY have been circulating heavily online for months and it is certainly an attractive vehicle. Based on GM's new Kappa platform, the SKY shares some components with the earlier released Pontiac Solstice, another two seat roadster. The SKY, however, has its own look with a very pronounced fender peak and sleek body style. Here are some of the attributes of the SKY:
- Front engine, rear drive, two seat roadster
- 50/50 front/rear weight distribution
- Manually operated cloth covered top folds down into the trunk
- Front pivoting hood
- 2.4L I4 engine producing 177 h.p. paired with a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission
- 18 inch wheels; 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS
- Power galore: air conditioning, locks, windows, doors, AM/FM/CD, etc.
The SKY was priced and designed to compete against two other roadsters, the Honda S2000 and Mazda's Miata. Although the SKY is technically a sister car to the Solstice, it appears that it is better suited to compete against the Japanese brands as the Saturn roadster comes fully equipped and incorporates a sleeker body design. Taking nothing away from the Pontiac, the SKY is definitely the more competitive of the two.
For Saturn, the SKY improves the brand's image immeasurably. Much in the way that the Corvette is a "halo" car for Chevrolet the SKY will be the same for Saturn. Production will be limited to just 10-12,000 vehicles annually and purchasing a SKY will likely mean buyers paying well over sticker price for their car. Indeed, some reports are indicating dealer mark ups as high as $5000 in the face of stiff demand.
Beyond the SKY, Saturn will also be introducing a second new vehicle this year, the Aura. Replacing the L-Series, the Aura midsize sedan borrows heavily from GM's European division, Opel, and incorporates the bold design of SKY in its front end.
Yes, the days of being known as a builder of compact plastic cars in Tennessee is over; a new Saturn is rising and if all the hoopla related to the SKY is any indication, Saturn's future is certainly very promising.

Saturn – That Was Then, This Is Now
Step back in time with me if you would, about 20 years to be precise, to an era when automaker General Motors was busy making plans for their all new company, Saturn. This wasn't to be just another GM division mind you as Saturn was created as a separate import fighting company meant to take on the likes of Toyota and Honda. By 1990, the first Saturn cars rolled off a bucolic Tennessee countryside assembly line signaling a new cooperation between workers and management. Immediately, the funky little "S Series" of sedans, wagons, and coupes were a hit and GM was soon lauded for taking a bold initiative.
Today, Saturn is much different from the brand that took on Japan's top automakers. Instead of being a separate, wholly owned car company the make is now one of General Motors' many automotive divisions. The S Series sold well and the introduction of subsequent models helped the brand, but ultimately parent GM decided to pull the company within the General's fold as it chose to close down Oldsmobile instead. Current models being sold by Saturn are much different from what was originally offered, but the company has managed to keep one huge attribute that originally propelled the brand forward: people are first. Let's take a look at Saturn's current line up and the vehicles soon to be introduced.
ION - After a decade of service, the S Series was retired in favor of the comparably sized ION. Unlike the S Series, the ION does not include a wagon, but it does include a four door coupe and sedan. Unfortunately, the car is not very competitive with similar models and GM is looking at an Opel-inspired car to take its place by the end of this decade.
VUE - A recent makeover has kept the VUE, Saturn's small SUV, competitive. In addition, a pending hybrid model is expected to strengthen the line and talk of an all new compact model showing up in 2009 has the auto world abuzz.
RELAY - Saturn's first minivan is a clone to models sold by Chevrolet and Buick. Unlike earlier Saturn models which featured polymer side impact panels [to limit dents], the RELAY is all sheet metal and simply a copy of other divisions' vehicles. Still, the RELAY has filled an important hole in the Saturn line up by offering a larger vehicle for loyal Saturn owners.
SKY - Forget what you might have thought about Saturn previously. The SKY roadster is a hit for one big reason: it is absolutely ****. Sharing components with the Pontiac Solstice, the SKY has radically transformed the brand's image all by itself. Priced under $25,000, the SKY is competitive with the Mazda Miata and is a low cost alternative to the BMW Z4.
AURA - Another vehicle built to battle the division's bland image, the AURA steps in to the midsize category replacing the L Series which was discontinued two years earlier. Based on GM's Epsilon platform, the AURA borrows heavily from GM's German division -- Opel - while incorporating a style and design that favors the Saturn SKY.
OUTLOOK - To be introduced before the end of 2006, the OUTLOOK will be Saturn's first bigger SUV. Although considered to be a "crossover" by many, the OUTLOOK is a 7 passenger SUV meant to complement the smaller VUE. With the addition of the OUTLOOK in the Saturn fold, GM will take a break before tinkering with the Saturn line up.
Truly, Saturn of 2007 will look much different from Saturn of the 1990s. For years, Saturn dealers were content to sell only one model - the S Series - but today's Saturn is going well beyond all of that. With a hybrid VUE in the line up and other variations of existing models also being planned, the once spartan Saturn line up is nearly filled to capacity. This is great news for Saturn loyalists looking for choices beyond the base models and a promise that GM is investing money in its import fighting division.

Saturn Gives General Motors A Boost
The attention given by General Motors to Saturn was repaid after the brand performed well and helped the automaker increase its May sales compared to last year. The quality offered by Saturn cars tied General Motors with the Toyota Motor Corporation for the fourth place in the Strategic Vision annual quality survey. General Motors and Toyota both trail Volkswagen AG, Nissan Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.
The study, which placed General Motors and Toyota tied for fourth, was conducted by Strategic Vision, a research firm based in California. Last year, General Motors finished fifth in the survey.
The Saturn brand in this year's survey finished fifth among the 21 non-luxury brands in the United States auto market. Last year, the brand finished eighth. The brand trails Volkswagen, Nissan, GMC, and Honda brands in this year's survey. One of the reasons for the improvement of Saturn on the list is their Saturn Aura model which bested popular Asian cars in its segment which are the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, and the Nissan Altima.
For the past years, General Motors has been criticized for almost neglecting the Saturn brand. Recently though, the Detroit-based car manufacturer introduced new vehicles to Saturn's lineup to attract and lure in more car buyers. Aside from the Aura, the Saturn Outlook, with its European styling and reliable parts such as Saturn spark plugs, is a concrete example of Saturn's revitalized lineup. In the past, Saturn capitalized on their good customer relations but suffered from dwindling sales as their lineup did not offer much choices and options to consumers.
Instead of just relying on the dealership experience, which they have done for some time, Alexander Edwards says, "We're going to come out with products that are going to blow everybody away." Alexander Edwards is the president of Strategic Vision Inc. The firm tapped 27,000 United States car buyers to get their views on the particular car brands that they have bought or are looking to buy the next time they need a car.
According to Kyle Johnson, the director of Saturn communications, the result of the survey reflects the findings of General Motors' internal research on the Saturn brand. He added that they are "competing at a different level" with the release of their new lineup. Last year, they offered the Saturn Aura and the Saturn Sky and following the release of those cars, Saturn introduced the full size crossover SUV Saturn Outlook. Johnson pointed out the improvements that their current lineup has over their past models saying that: "The interiors have been refined, the handling improved and the body panels, which were dent-resistant plastic in the past, are now steel, allowing for better fits."
The Saturn brand posted the highest increase in sale for the month of May. The brand posted an increase of 69 percent compared to last year's May sales. The brand posted the highest increase in sales of all auto brands in the United States auto market. The May 2007 sales also marked the most number of cars that the brand has sold for a month in its entire history. With its increasing popularity among car buyers and the level of its quality, Saturn is emerging as a strong contender in the United States auto market.

Saturn AURA: Turning a Corner
General Motors' Saturn division is one of the few bright spots for the troubled U.S. automaker. As of this writing, the parent company is in the midst of plant closings, massive layoffs, and big losses. Bankruptcy may be the ultimate "out" for GM, but even if the company doesn't choose that route, big changes are coming nevertheless. Fortunately, the Saturn division is one of the few bright spots for the legendary automaker as are Cadillac, GMC, and select models including the Corvette and the company's big trucks. For Saturn, there is a certain "AURA" about the division both in model name as well as in sensation.
Step back two decades and General Motors is all abuzz over a new car company in the process of being created: Saturn. As a wholly owned subsidiary of GM, Saturn was designed to take on Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda by building compact cars that American drivers really wanted and could rely upon. It worked. For most of the 1990s, the "S Series" was the sole model for Saturn; available in coupe, sedan, and wagon, the S Series achieved cult status and had a loyal following of owners who regularly congregated for meets at Spring Hill, TN where the cars were built. Even when the vehicles' design aged, the S Series maintained its high status with Saturn aficionados.
By the late 1990s, two new lines of vehicles were added to the Saturn brand. The VUE, became the company's sport utility vehicle while the "L Series" was the first large Saturn. In reality, the "L" was a midsize car as it was heavily derived from a model sold by GM's European division, Opel. With the latter model, Saturn hoped to provide the larger vehicle that S Series owners desired. Unfortunately, sales figures barely exceeded half of the quota anticipated by Saturn, so after a few years the model was retired.
Today, Saturn is no longer a separate company. With the demise of Oldsmobile, Saturn is now a full fledged division of General Motors. While some see this move as a bad thing, it has resulted in new products for the brand.
Soon after the L Series was retired, the RELAY was introduced. As the first Saturn model built on a U.S. G.M. platform, the 7 passenger people mover was a far cry from previous models. Still, the vehicle has filled a gaping hole in the Saturn line up.
Just this past Spring the SKY was introduced, an upscale limited production convertible. To say that the car has been received with gladness is an understatement. Quite frankly, the SKY is the "halo" car needed by Saturn, but fortunately the division isn't stopping there.
Although the L Series was a flop, GM is once again turning to its Opel division to produce a car. Combining Opel styling with a U.S. G.M. platform, the AURA sedan will be rolling into a showroom near you very soon.
So, what is so special about the AURA? Its good looks! Although it is nearly impossible to describe the vehicle without showing you a picture, the AURA is simply one imposing car. Although a sedan, the AURA is sporty looking with a grille that is not too far removed from the new SKY. With a 3.6L V6 engine mated to a six speed automatic transmission, the 250 h.p. AURA will definitely compete with the Camry, Accord, and Maxima for sales as well as for performance leadership. Throw in 19 inch wheels, a sporty interior, and responsive handling and the AURA just begs to be driven.
The best part of the AURA is that it isn't the L Series, a car criticized for being too bland and uninspiring. One look at the AURA and you can see that Saturn got it right this time.
Prices for the AURA haven't been announced yet, but you can expect fully loaded models to retail below $25,000 well within the range of its competition.
Will the AURA succeed? Well, it has too! Look for Saturn to do all that it can to make sure that the model is marketed to those who would buy one: the cross section of the North American populace. Yes, Saturn has turned a corner and hopefully the same came be said for the entire company.

Saturn Sky – Sneak Peek
Somebody at General Motors must love Saturn. One hundred year old Oldsmobile was killed off in favor of bringing the Saturn brand in-house. Up until the early part of this decade, Saturn was a separate automaker, wholly owned by GM. Now, as a bonafide GM division, the Saturn line is finally getting some much needed new models including the Sky roadster, the focus of this preview.
In the early 1990s, dent resistant polymer cars with the "S" designation began to roll of a factory line of a new plant located in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Several things were unusual about the project. The first was the company: Saturn. As a wholly owned but separately managed GM company, the Saturn initially escaped GM's often overbearing culture and began to produce cars on its own far removed from Detroit. The second unusual point about the company was the cars itself: compact, import-fighting models designed to withstand the onslaught from Japan of low priced, high quality cars. Available in coupe, sedan, and wagon the cars quickly caught on in part for their engineering as well as for their "no hassle, no haggle" pricing. The sticker price on the car was the price customers paid, making a visit to the Saturn show room a pleasure and not a chore.
As time has passed, the S series grew old and was replaced by the compact ION series. In addition, a midsized sedan and wagon, the L series, briefly served as the "larger" car in Saturn's extremely limited line up beginning in the late 1990s. The L series, based on an Opel platform, was retired in 2004 and replaced by a 7 passenger crossover vehicle, the RELAY. In addition, Saturn had introduced an SUV, the VUE, which is still in production today.
All of this translates into a limited line up, too limited in fact to compete successfully with other car lines. Enter the Saturn Sky.
The Saturn Sky, much like the already introduced Pontiac Solstice is a two seat roadster. Based on GM's new Delta series platform, the Sky, which will officially make its debut next spring as a 2007 model does something that no other Saturn has ever done: generate excitement.
Similar in size and looks to Honda's S2000 Roadster, the Sky will come equipped with 18 inch alloy wheels, a manually operated soft top, a reverse opening clamshell hood, leather bucket seats, and four wheel anti-locking brakes. Standard engine will be a 2.4 170hp I4 paired with either a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission.
Prices for the new Sky should come in at several thousand dollars higher than the Pontiac Solstice as the Sky is targeted and equipped slightly upmarket. MSRP starting around 25 thousand dollars is likely; only 10-12,000 models will be produced annually.
Other models are being planned for Saturn, but the Sky represents a fresh departure from what has long been perceived by many as a staid moniker. Judging by many published reports, the Sky is a step in the right direction and we can only hope that the other new models planned for Saturn generate at least half the hype of the Sky.

8 GM Brands: 1 or 2 Too Many?
Lots of folks are speculating about GM's future. If you take all the press reports at heart, you would think that General Motors is on life support. Quite frankly, the opposite is true especially when you look at the global picture. In 2005, "the General" sold more than 9 million cars worldwide, the first time the automaker reached that figure since 1978. Yes, U.S. auto sales are down and some are calling for GM to reduce its many brands, currently numbering 8. Who should GM let go? Or, should General Motors stick with the game plan and maintain all 8 brands?
For the record, GM's 8 brands are: Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Saturn, GMC, Hummer, and Saab. You could take Saab out of that pack as the Swedish automaker (although fully owned by GM) builds few cars in North America. Still, GM includes Saab in its marketing schema so we'll keep them in for argument's sake.
Clearly, Cadillac is GM's luxury division; Chevrolet is it's budget or "All American" division; while GMC is the truck division. Beyond that, there is much muddling of divisions, but Buick is a maker of "near luxury" vehicles (Cadillac lite) while Hummer is GM's specialty truck division. The Saab line is a bit confusing as it once was a true European division. Now, the make is chiefly featuring rebadged GM and Subaru vehicles with little original models to show for it. Finally, Pontiac and Saturn duplicate much of what the other divisions do, although the Saturn mystique of "no haggle pricing" gives the make a certain aura to it. That leaves Pontiac.
Pontiac, like the recently killed off Oldsmobile name, is probably one of the most vulnerable of the true "American" makes. Saturn will survive because its dealer network is tops and consumer satisfaction ranks up there with Lexus.
Ultimately, the Saab name will likely die first. Outside of the U.S., particularly in Europe, Opel is a known name and an important GM make. Word has it that some of Saab's production will shift to Germany and certain rebadged Opels will begin to sport the Saab name. Let's just say once that happens, there is little reason to continue making Saabs. Let the Saab name die with dignity. Why spoil it by selling rebadged Opels as Saabs?
Personally, I think GM should leave well enough alone with its remaining American brands. I wasn't in favor of Oldsmobile's demise and I am not in favor of killing off trusted brands. GM is retooling its operation as old models are killed off and as new or revived models step in. Look for the Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Saturn Sky, and the Buick Enclave to help spark their respective divisions to renewed glory. Am I living a pipe dream? Maybe, but at least my imagination is going in a positive direction.

Saturn 07-08 Sky (2.0L Turbo Redline) Fujita Cold Air Intake
"A Cold Air Intake is traditionally longer and in most cases extended behind the bumper cover so that it can ingest more direct air. In addition to more direct air, the longer plenum achieves higher torque gains as well as impressive horsepower figures. Depending on the complexity of the plenum route, the Fujita Cold Air Intake may come as a 1 piece or 2 piece intake system. Different diameters, filters, and bends are all key factors of the R&D process of each Cold Air Intake. The in-house Dynojet is the final judge of which intake configuration will make it to production. Air/Fuel rations are also an important factor in testing the Cold Air Intake, ensuring that safe and near factory levels are maintained in order to not trip any electronics sensors on the vehicle."

New Deal Can Close Two Gm Plants
In a detailed copy of the new agreement between General Motors and United Auto Workers, the automaker committed plans for its 16 U.S. assembly plants. However, the new deal also posed potential shutting down of plants in Michigan and Indiana and other facilities. The new vehicle production in the 16 plants was GM’s response to the UAW’s demands for job security. On October 10, the 74,000 GM hourly employees will complete the ratification of the new deal.
The details of the deal were posted in the internet by Gregg Shotwell, a GM worker and a UAW critic. According to Shotwell, he got the copy of the agreement from a UAW official who attended the contract briefing held in the UAW’s headquarters in Detroit. He did not give the identity of the official as the person requested for anonymity since the deal was not yet been voted upon.
The new contract calls for selling or closing of a plant in Indianapolis and closing an engine plant in Livonia, Detroit. The “white book”, a detailed document revealing that the Indianapolis stamping operation will still continue or for potential relocation to another GM plant “until such time as the plant can be sold to an outside buyer”.
The document also said that GM is considering to keep the plant, however if the plant is not sold or kept, it will be shut down “no sooner than December 2011”. The plant is providing 850 jobs according to a GM web site.
The Livonia plant in Detroit employing 300 workers will continue its operations until its present vehicle production ends in 2010.
“The national parties will jointly explore opportunities for current Livonia seniority employees,” the document said.
The “white book” document also disclosed that the operations of plants in Flint and Parma, Ohio near Cleveland are also in danger. Under the heading “Product Opportunities”, GM and UAW will look for opportunities for the employees in the Flint plant.
For the Parma plant, the document said that there is no future powertrain products that will be allocated. The plant has stamping operations which will continue to generate new products.
Other GM facilities declared as idle will also be closed, according to the document.
Under the new agreement, the Flint North engine plant will add a new facility. GM will be building three “lean, agile, flex engine modules” in a new site close to the plant. The new plant is expected to manufacture a huge number of engines as many as 1,200 four and six-cylinder engines per day.
GM has no plans for the Orion Township plant assembly plant that presently produces the Pontiac G6 under the new agreement, giving edge to the fierce competitors of the G6 like BMW and Volvo and its Volvo parts. The document also said that both UAW and GM are exploring opportunities for future products. GM is also planning to transfer Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice production from the Wilmington plant in Delaware to the plant in Bowling Green Ky, after the production cycle ends in 2011.
“No future product allocation has been identified beyond the life of the current agreement,” the document says of Wilmington.
“This isn’t a very genuine job security agreement,” Shotwell said.
“The UAW didn’t win anything. The plants that are allowed to stay operating were already allowed to stay open.” he added.
Shotwell’s assessment did not convince union officials from factories that will receive new products provided by the new deal.

The Gayest Cars on the Road
There’s no denying that the vehicles most researched by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) purchasers are those produced by gay-friendly automakers.
With more income and fewer kids than the average car buyer, GLBT turns to smaller, fun-to-drive, sporty cars. Joe LaMuraglia, Gaywheels founder, has this to say: "There are many stereotypes about what we as a community drive, [but] we are as diverse as the rest of the population."
That said, LaMuraglia noted, "The vehicles that the Gaywheels.com user is researching [are] markedly different than that of other automotive research websites, while still reflecting the diverse interests in our community."
“To wit, the ten most researched vehicles are for the most part small and relatively affordable. All ten are from makers considered friendly to the GLBT community,” said Bill Howard and Errol Pierre-Louis of Technoride.
Gaywheels.com, the sole source of information specifically targeted to and about GLBT car-shoppers, recently announced its list of the Top Ten Most-Researched Vehicles during the second quarter of 2007. For the fourth straight quarter, the entry-level Toyota Yaris maintained the top position, while for the first time ever, a Nissan product, the Infiniti-branded FX sport-utility vehicle, joined the list, the Web site said.
In releasing a list of its Top Ten researched vehicles, Gaywheels.com said that the ten in the most demand are the Toyota Yaris, Saab 9-3, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Eos, Dodge Caliber, Toyota Camry, Audi A3, Volkswagen Rabbit and the Infiniti FX.
The Yaris is a model name used by the Toyota Motor Corp on the export version of two different models: the Vitz hatchback, sold as the Yaris in Europe, South America, Australia, and North America; and the Belta sedan, sold in North America, South America and Australia.
Additionally, the Vitz and the Belta share underpinnings with each other. However, while the Vitz was designed at Toyota's European design studios, the Belta was created at Toyota's Japanese design studios. The two diverse design projects for similar cars marketed toward varied demographics.
The Yaris replaced the Saturn Sky roadster as the most researched vehicle. Meanwhile, the Infiniti FX was a new addition replacing the Pontiac G6.
The Sky roadster from the Saturn marque of the General Motors Corp. was released in the first quarter of 2006. It utilizes the Kappa automobile platform shared with the Pontiac Solstice. The Sky features a Saturn turbo, 18-inch wheels and a 2.4 L Ecotec LE5 I4 engine that generates 177 horsepower as well as an all-new I-4 2.0L direct injected turbocharged engine that makes 260 horsepower. The roadster also features manual and automatic transmissions with five gears.
Gaywheels.com classifies vehicle manufacturers as gay-friendly or not based on their corporate policies for offering domestic-partner benefits to their employees in the United States. The company has been keeping tabs on gay-friendly vehicles on a quarterly basis for the past 1.5 years. The latest findings were taken for the quarter ending June 30.
"Since the inception of this list, the Top Ten Most-Researched Vehicles have always come solely from gay-friendly automakers, delineating the importance of a brand's corporate policies and positions in regard to the *** community," said LaMuraglia.
The Gaywheels Top Ten Most-Researched Vehicles is derived from the Web site’s server logs and sheds light on what new vehicles are most popular with our users. We publish the list quarterly, the company said.
What is with the gay-friendly factor? Research on the GLBT consumer showed that majority of auto shoppers want to spend their money with companies that have progressive policies towards GLBT employees. The only problem is, that information is not easy to find, until now, the Web site noted.

Motorcycle Battery Tender to Trickle Charge My Battery
About three years ago I moved back up to Michigan and to a much colder winter. Brrr, it can get mighty cold when December rolls around. Prior to this I was riding my Fatboy year around and I did not need a motorcycle battery tender like I do now. Well I suppose if you only ride your bike once every couple of weeks you would want to have one to connect to just so you could add a trickle charge to your battery. But then I rode mine just about daily and still would if the ice and cold would go away.
I have never been the sharpest tool in the shed so I just jumped on the bike and rode over the the Harley Dealer to see what I needed. They had this small battery tender, trickle charger so I bought it after all it did say Harley Davidson on it. I probably knew better but then I am a Harley nut. It works just fine but since HD stands for "hundred dollars" I paid more than I had to for it. I should have done a little bit more research on the subject.
Moving back to Michigan also gave me a much smaller yard to cut so I had been using a walking mower. You know the drill get the grass cut and my exercise at the same time. That left my riding lawnmower siting all summer so that when it was time to pick up the leaves with it (raking is out of the question) the battery was not only dead it was also shot. I already told you I am not the sharpest tool, I should have put a battery tender on it and I would have added a lot of life to the battery. So this time I decided to do some searching for the trickle charger that I needed. Yes it does pay to have more than one battery tender in the house or garage depending where you store that motorcycle during the winter.
Once I started doing my research online I found that the motorcycle Battery Tender that I had bought previously was just a tad over priced mainly because of the name that was painted on it. I found one site that was loaded with a ton of different systems that would do the trick and keep my numerous batteries up to snuff. I say numerous but really only three, the Fatboy (the most important) the deep cell marine battery for the electric trolling motor (the second in importance) and the lawn tractor (takes a distant third) but they all need to have a trickle charge.
I even found one unit that would do all three at the same time. How is that for convenience! All in all, it is much less expensive to buy a decent motorcycle battery tender to trickle charge your batteries than it is to go out and buy new batteries every couple of years. A trickle charge will keep the battery hot so when you decide to ride you can.

Smooth Gear Shifting With an Axle Assembly
There are many parts in a vehicle that account for the rotation of the wheels – the steering wheel, the shifting gears, and the axle assembly. The car's axle assembly is a combination of an axle shaft, CV-joint (constant velocity) and sometimes a U-joint. It's main function is to transfer the rotational force coming from the transmission to the wheels. Thus, with its function, it is normally found on front and 4-wheel drive vehicles, trucks, and high-end rear-wheel drive European cars. This ensures that the high performance of the engine is transmitted to wheels in a manner that it is still at its full potential, but within the control of the driver.
Because of this, Saturn Corporation, one of the makes of General Motors, pays extra attention in the production of their Saturn Axle Assembly. They commit to giving only comfort to their customers, and comfort is what they give. They just don't put comfort on the seats but on the whole of the ride as well, and so they make their Saturn Axle Assembly with much effort. This way, shifting gears won't be much of a hassle anymore.
As what's mentioned before, axle assembly is found in 4-wheel drives and sports utility vehicles like the Saturn models. Putting that in mind, anyone could come to the conclusion that Saturn Axle Assembly is always faced with much stress on the road. With the difficult terrain and off-roads that these SUVs usually travel in, the Saturn Axle Assembly becomes real prone to damage. The bumps and potholes found on the road can really cause harm to the drivetrain, specifically its component parts. The axle shaft can give stress to the CV-joint or even a U-joint if not handled properly. The transfer of the gear should be seamless and so the parts must be meticulously greased and be kept safe from dirts outside.
Therefore the drivetrain should always be working at its best. The rubber gasket or the boot, which protects a CV-joint from dirt should always be checked for cracks or leaks. These dirts could contaminate the whole Saturn Axle Assembly and can cause damage for the joints. This contamination could be the worst damage they could get as repairing it won't help, and even flushing these contaminants may even worsen the problem.
So it is just anyone's bet is, that the only preventive measure drivers could do is to drive their cars carefully especially when in rough roads. Also, have a routine checkup. However, if worse comes to worst and a driver would need to replace his Saturn Axle Assembly, then they just need to go to their trusted auto parts store that has OEM quality parts for the axle assembly.

Cold Air Intake: Key to Flat Out Saturn Performance in Lung-busting Drive Applications
The cold air intake of a Saturn is like a fresh set of lungs for the car’s engine. It effectively mixes the fuel with the cold air from outside the engine compartment. With more cold air, more oxygen is made available for fuel combustion, resulting in the increase on engine power production. Letting the car breathe in denser oxygen enables it to hypercharge its internal combustion engine through the burning of burn conducive air component of the fuel mixture. Hence, the significant improvement in combustion performance equates to greater engine power.
Installing a cold air intake system on a Saturn is likewise set to improve the car’s upper power band with only a minuscule reduction of the power in the lower rev range with power gains in the 0-15 HP (horsepower) range. This process of increasing power and performance is made possible without increasing fuel consumption. Fuel efficiency is a natural by-product of the Saturn cold air intake, while also maximizing the engine’s output at the same time. Cold air intakes have become a widespread add-on on a wide variety of Saturn makes because they are affordable, easy to install, enhance the car’s appearance and improve engine sound significantly.
The Saturn cold air intakes boast of a better high-rev performance than what stock air filters can give to the car. Due to its ideal position in the Saturn engine compartment, cold air intakes get more access to colder air, unlike other intakes which just let the air stay in the engine which oftentimes heat up the air because of the engine's high temperature. Every Saturn cold air intake system is additionally loaded with a slew of extra features: they can be used in all 50 states, has a lifetime DRYFLOW synthetic air filter, comes with a limited lifetime warranty, and best of all it does not invalidate the vehicle’s factory-issued warranty.

"We are particularly pleased with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, which pushed our full-size truck sales up more than ten percent for the month. As with many of our vehicles, these great all-new trucks offer what the customer is looking for - best-in-class fuel economy, terrific performance and tremendous value. And our newest entry to the crossover segment, the Buick Enclave, is performing ahead of our expectations. Dealers are selling them as soon as they arrive from the plant. Our mid-size crossover segment performance, including the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, continues to grow at a blistering pace."
The Saturn brand of the automaker also made a dramatic change with its product renaissance. The said rebirth has tremendously accelerated increased total sales to almost 69 percent compared with a year ago. Saturn’s sales are bolstered by the warm public acceptance of its new lineup which includes the Aura and Aura Hybrid, Sky, Outlook, Vue and the Vue Hybrid. Part of the renaissance campaign is the introduction of the Astra as the replacement of the Ion small car. For this year, Saturn brand is said to be the fastest growing brand.

2007: Year of Auto Contrasts and Extremes
It is time to experience the kick of contrasts and extremes in the automotive world because automakers are setting forth their idiosyncratic 2007 vehicle lineups. The latest vehicle models from Acura to Volvo will wipe out the customary trend of homogeny in rivalry. This time around, automakers are showing off contrasts and extremes.
To boot, 2007 model vehicles include efficient, full-size pickup trucks from GMC, Chevrolet, and Toyota. Fuel-saving small cars from Honda, Toyota, Chevy and Nissan create a great demand in the market. Ford, Lincoln, Acura, Jeep, Mazda and Saturn are also benefiting from their sales in crossover sport utility vehicles. Said crossovers are manufactured to achieve gentle, powerful and fuel-efficient ride. Large trucks will not be tolerable to be left behind. Hence automakers like Cadillac, Audi, Ford, GMC, Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz made their large trucks lineup outstanding.
Wide-range of vehicle lineup will soon be presented to astound auto crowd. Acura parts were upgraded to come up with RSX, the smallest car of the automaker with a starting price lower than $21,000. Acura also boasts its smaller version of SUV 2007 RDX as well as its mid-size sedan.
Chrysler has revamped its lineup. The automaker has added modern headlamps, hood strakes and a shorter rear end. Chrysler will also introduce its very first large SUV which is based on the Dodge Durango.

Cadillac Brand Undergoing Product Transformation
The sweeping transformation is an important part of GM’s blueprint to build Cadillac into a truly global luxury brand that can compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW in terms of size and price. Aside from using top-of-the-line auto parts such as GM wheel and others, the automaker has set a concrete plan on how to further enhance the quality of the Cadillac.
The redesigned CTS sedan which is part of the new products will arrive this fall and will be presented as a 2008 model. It will be followed in 2009 by a new CTS coupe and wagon. These two products are aimed more for the European market but will be sold also in North America.
Basically the new CTS is the forerunner of Cadillac’s “next-generation” look which is subtle and less angular than the Art & Science theme pioneered by the original CTS. The styling inspiration of the CTS is derived from the Cadillac Sixteen concept which debuted four years ago at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
As part of the company’s move to a more global image, Cadillac also plans to continue its shift to rear-wheel drive. Such move includes the launching of two new high-end RWD sedans which are directed primarily for North America and a low-end RWD sedan that could replace the BLS compact in Europe.
By 2012, Cadillac will also offer a range of vehicles on four different RWD platforms beginning with a new compact architecture known as Alpha. An updated version of the Sigma platform highlights the ’08 CTS, while the next generation DTS luxury sedan and a new V12 flagship sedan known as the XLS will be built on the upcoming Zeta platform. The replacement for the XLR roadster will share the new C7 platform with the next generation Chevrolet Corvette.
Additional part of Cadillac’s plans is to add a new midrange crossover vehicle known internally as the BRX which is an off the premium version of the all-wheel drive Theta platform. This new platform is also referred to by suppliers in the code name TE.
The Cadillac’s plan would have some casualties such as the SRX and the STS which will be replaced by new and updated models. The new Alpha platform is said to be the masterpiece of GM product czar Bob Lutz which will be used as the base for a broad range of midsize rear-wheel-drive models for several GM brands which will include Holden, Cadillac, Opel, Saab, Pontiac, Vauxhall, and Chevrolet.
According to GM suppliers the Alpha will make use of bits and pieces from the Kappa platform that will serve as the base for both the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. It can be remembered that General Motors has provided a sneak preview of the Alpha at the Holden Torana Showcar in Australia. The current design for the Alpha includes a flexible platform that can accommodate both rear and all-wheel-drive as well as GM’s Ecotec four-cylinder engine family.
The top engine choice would possibly be a twin-cam 2.4 liter inline-4, with a supercharged version available for performance-oriented models. Also to be offered across the range is a six-speed manual and automatic transmission.
According to some reliable sources inside General Motors, Lutz would like to see the Alpha platform employed in place of the front-wheel-drive Epsilon II platform on a number of GM products and that would include the planned replacements for the Cadillac BLS and Pontiac G6. Likewise, Chevrolet may also get an Alpha-based successor to the Malibu sedan or a coupe companion named as the Chevelle. The range of Alpha models is expected to reach market by 2010 to 2011.

He further said that the company is grateful to the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups that put their full-size truck sales up in a 10 percent increase. He added that these hot selling all-new trucks are just like many of their vehicles that offer fuel economy, astonishing performance and extreme value – everything that a customer is demanding for. GM’s total sales of over 16,600 vehicles in this segment put monthly performance to 211 percent higher as compared with May 2006’s GM’s mid-crossover segment sales.
According to LaNeve, they are seeing good results. One of which is the increased residual values for their products. He said that this was a result of staying coordinated and dedicated to their North American competition and market growth plans. He added that the result implied that their company is providing products that lead the industry in terms of design, segment fuel economy, warranty coverage and performance; and it is tantamount to a beneficial cost of ownership experience. The company anticipates the same customer acceptance as their many vehicles when their new products like the Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Malibu enter the dealer showrooms before the year ends.

Saturn Astra To Come Soon
In an effort to revitalize the Saturn brand, General Motors looked in the direction of the continent of Europe. With the help of its Opel brand, General Motors has so far successfully reinvented Saturn. The Outlook and the Aura are just the early offering from Saturn with European influence. Come fall of this year, General Motors will introduce a rebadged Opel Astra as the Saturn Astra in the United States auto market.
According to General Motors, in order for the European Astra to be accepted in the United States, it has to be both attractive in appearance and very driver-friendly. The first criterion, of course, is to ensure that the Saturn Astra can attract the younger generation of car buyers. The second attribute is to makes sure that upon test driving the Astra, potential car buyers would have a hard time walking away from the car.
The hatchback is designed with European styling cues. The trapezoidal headlight configuration and the wide open air intake grill accentuate the front end of the Astra. Sporting the Saturn emblem on its narrow grille accents the gentle slope of its hood. According to General Motors, the Astra will be available as a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatch and yet another three-door hatch but given the Sport Hatch classification.
According to the manufacturer of the Astra, these are built at General Motors’ assembly facility in Antwerp, Belgium. Both the three-door and the five-door hatch versions of the Astra share the same platform with a 102.9-inch wheelbase. Oddly though, the three-door hatch is longer than the five-door version by 1.5 inches. There is also a difference in ride height as the three-door hatchback is 0.6 inches lower than its sibling says General Motors.
Powering the Astra in Europe and possibly in its introduction in North America is a 1.8-liter Ecotec in-line four-cylinder engine. Fitted with Saturn head gaskets and other engine parts, it can produce as much as 140 horsepower. Torque output is rated at 129 lb-ft at 3,800 revs per minute.
The engine can power the Astra to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 9.5 seconds. Top speed according to General Motors is 129 miles per hour. As far as gas mileage rating, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is yet to test the Saturn Astra. In Europe though, the Opel Astra is given a gas mileage rating of 38.7 mpg on combined city and highway driving. For pure city driving, the Opel Astra gets 28.5 miles from a gallon of gasoline.
Since Saturn is sure to produce a Red Line trim for the Astra when it hits North American dealerships, it is expected that a more powerful engine will be made available for the Astra. It is speculated that the Saturn Astra Red Line will be equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an output of 178 hp. Another candidate for the Red Line trim is the engine used on the Vauxhall VXR and the Opel OPC versions of the Astra. The power plant is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a power output of 237 hp.
According to General Motors, the Saturn Astra will replace the Saturn ION in Saturn's lineup. The Astra will join the redesigned Aura, the Vue, the all-new Outlook and the convertible Saturn Sky in Saturn's 2008 model year lineup.
Nissan To Offer Nismo 350Z for 2008 Model Year
The global auto market is filled with fast cars which are aimed at performance enthusiasts and speed junkies. These cars are designed to be driven fast and this is the quality that some car buyers look for in a car. One of these cars famous for its speed is the Nissan 350Z.
The 350Z is a sports car produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan Motor Company. The current 350Z model is the fifth generation of the Z car which was first introduced by Nissan in 1970. During that year, Nissan still went by the name Datsun in the market. After years and years of improvement on the Z car, Nissan announced that they will be offering the Nissan Nismo 350Z for the 2008 model year.
The 350Z comes from the Datsun 240Z which during its time is unlike anything that Nissan has produced. Today, the Nismo 350Z is set to once again capture the attention of performance enthusiasts all over the world. In 2003, the Nissan 350Z made its debut and from then on has become one of the most sought after sports cars in the market. One advantage that the Nissan has over its European and American counterpart is its reasonable price. It is a known fact that Asian car brands are known for the lower price of their models compared to American and European car brands. In fact, the Z’s performance earns it the mythical distinction of being the bona fide muscle car of the Japanese. Its performance focused engineering makes it a strong contender to European brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche.
For the 2008 model year, the Nismo-badged 350Z will be a front-engined sports car with a rear wheel drive configuration remaining true to its lineage. Its exterior styling captures the attention of almost anyone. Its front end is characterized by an aggressive looking headlight configuration. The Nissan badge on the car’s nose emphasizes the bold styling cues used by Nissan on the 350Z’s front grille. The bumper with its couple of fins sticking out gives the car a look of a race-prepped automobile. The five spoke wheels enhance the car’s aesthetic value while the rear spoiler gives it that sports car look that tuned cars often displays.
What the Nismo 350Z hides under its hood is the standard Z car engine that is the 3.5-liter direct overhead cam, 24-valve V6 engine. This powerplant is capable of producing 306 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. That power can be enhanced by aftermarket parts such as Nissan cold air intake systems which allow cooler air to enter the intake manifold. The power produced by the engine is the transferred to the rear wheels via a six speed manual transmission. The precision engineered gear box allows the power produced by the engine to be smoothly transferred to the wheels with as little waste as possible.
The power produced by the engine and transmitted to the drive wheels, of course, should be checked by high quality brakes and Nissan provided the Nismo 350Z with four disc brakes for every wheel. It also features an anti-lock braking system and the electronic brake force distribution system. Both of these features allow the driver to engage the brakes at high speed without the risk of loosing control of the vehicle.
The Nissan Nismo 350Z is up against formidable foes in its segment. Among its direct competition are the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Chevrolet Corvette, Honda S2000, Mazda RX-8, Mercedes-Benz SLK 350, Pontiac Solstice GXP, Porsche Cayman S, and the Saturn Sky Red Line.
Time To Go Bold And Topless
Winter’s final blast is over and it is high time to think of the thrilling adventures of spring. Budding flowers on the garden, birds chirping on the trees, soft breeze brushing your hair, and the exciting ride offered by a convertible are few of the reasons to long for the spring to come. But spring is here so it is high time that you ready your extra energy to enjoy the season to the fullest extent.
It is high time to go bold and *******. No, not you. I mean the cars. The convertibles can do that to your satisfaction. They could offer you one-exciting spring ride. Wherever you are in the globe you can share the joys of convertibles. They come in different colors, shapes, styles, amenities and prices. This year’s hottest convertibles include the Saturn Sky Redline, Volvo C70, and the Chevrolet Corvette.
The latest Saturn Sky has transformed from a monotonous coupe to a surprisingly stunning machine. To deviate from the usual, the Saturn Sky Redline is given an aggressive and sharp stance. It was also given a hearty performance boost coming from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Sky is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster with a relatively huge front end and tiny rear deck, just like the Solstice. The Saturn Sky defines what a pure American vehicle could do. The 2007 Saturn Sky Redline is priced at $29,025 while the turbo version starts at $25,325.
Another gorgeous coupe is the 2007 Volvo C70. The enchantment is not on Volvo starters - it is on its drop top feature. The roof of the Volvo C70 is the center of attention. With the motorized whirring, harmonized separation and exactness of folding, viewers cannot help but be amazed.
The Volvo C70, a two-door coupe, is the kind of vehicle fit for aficionados who wanted the free-spirited ride offered by a convertible. With just a button-push away, the C70 could already offer the wonders of a convertible. The car is has a base MSRP of $38,710.
If you wanted visceral escapades, the 2007 Corvette Convertible could lead you there. Thinking of a romantic weekend getaway? Let Corvette show you the way and cruise under the blue-hued sky.
If you are a European car fanatic, you might find the Corvette overly forceful. However, according to an aficionado, “While I'm a fan of many European brands, I still enjoy whatever chance I get to drive the latest version of Chevrolet's iconic sports car. I actually didn't car much for the last iteration -- the '90s version in particular had a sheen of middle-age-crisis and Viagra-prescription desperation -- the new, shorter and more agile model is a visual treat.” The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible has a base MSRP of $53,335.

Covercraft Front End Mask Bra – 2PC System, Fits 2007-09 SATURN
Originally started in Germany, where Porsche covered the front of each car as it came off the production line prior to a shake-down run around their famous test track, masks have long been considered a necessity for any car owner wanting to protect the area of the car that takes the most abuse on the road - the front end, especially the leading edge of the hood and any painted areas around the grille.Quality features you'll find in every Covercraft mask:Protective air intake screens are an integral part of the mask, not separate, and they are sewn into the outside of the mask so there are no loose pieces of material inside to abrade the paint surface. Covered aluminum tabs allow adjustment at the fender wells as vinyl expands and contracts due to temperature. Take a look at a non-adjustable mask being driven down the road and you'll see why this is an important feature. Reinforced air foils prevent flapping and lift. Very few patterns don't require this feature; there is just too much air whipping around the front of your vehicle as it goes down the road, like cross-winds and back drafts from passing semi trucks. We use a micro-perforated finish on our vinyl. It allows the mask to "breathe" and permits moisture vapor to evaporate when the vehicle is driven in wet weather. Still, if a mask becomes wet and is going to be left sitting in the sun, we recommend it be removed to allow the backing to dry properly. Our heavy-gauge leather grain vinyl has a soft, protective backing. We use white non-woven fleece so you can easily see when it's time to clean the back-side of the mask. Seams are overlapped and finished with a strong, durable top stitch. Edges are covered with soft, non-abrasive felt-rimmed bindings.

New Saturn Dealer Hopes to Win Over More Customers
Many Saturn customers said that a Boardman location would be more convenient. After months of planning and renovation, Saturn of Boardman has opened. With another Saturn location on U.S. Route 422 in Niles, car dealer Jim Pace decided to expand last October and purchase the former Frederick Dodge location at 7554 Market St. This is how appealing the renaissance of Saturn product lines has become.
"We had a lot of people coming to the Niles location saying how they wish there was a dealership in Boardman and how it would be more convenient," said Bill Burns, the general manager of the new store. Burns stressed that there was a need for another Saturn dealership in the area because Pace serves five counties with an expanding line of cars.
"We went from one small car to a whole lineup," Burns said. "Now we go from a two-seater to an eight-passenger vehicle." He added that when it opened in 1991 the Niles dealership sold only S-Series compact cars. While being one of the fuel efficient cars of its time, it was hard to sell just small cars to the public.
Now purchasers can pick sport-utility vehicles such as the Outlook and the Vue; mid-size and compact cars, the Aura and the Astra; and the Sky Roadster. Two of the cars, the Vue and Aura, are available as fuel-efficient hybrids but are currently sold out.
The Outlook crossover SUV is based on the GM Lambda platform, which it shares with the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. It is powered by the 6 L DOHC 24-valve HFV6 engine with Variable Valve Timing available in two versions: the XE and the XR. The Vue, also a crossover SUV, uses the GM Theta platform. It flaunts durable auto parts like the Saturn strut, engines and cold air intake for uncompromised performance.
Another product of Saturn’s renaissance is the Aura, the replacement of the L-Series. The Astra, meanwhile, will be produced for the 2008 model year to replace the Ion as Saturn’s smallest model. The Astra will be available in three-door and five-door hatchback body styles. The rebirth concept of the automaker also produced a new roadster - the Saturn Sky. The roadster features 18 in wheels and a 2.4 L Ecotec LE5 I4 engine that produces 177 hp and the new I-4 2.0L direct injected turbocharged engine that produces 260 hp.
The former dealership, Frederick Dodge, moved down the road after acquiring Greenwood Market Motor. Combining their vehicles together, the location at 7871 Market St., is known as the Frederick Chrysler Jeep Dodge.
The previous building of Dodge was gutted, leaving nothing but a shell. The multimillion-dollar renovation covered repaving and expanding the lot and adding more landscaping and lighting. What is more, the exterior of the building was given a new appearance. It is only one of three in the country with Saturn's new building style dubbed as "Ex Set."
On the inside, Burns said that the store is set up to appear more casual to customers. "Some places have most of their customers tucked away, not having them around sales consultants," he said, "We put them where they can interact with them and not feel secluded."
With two lounges and a children's play room, Burns hopes customers will feel more comfortable. "It's not like we're putting them in a dark room and say we'll call them when their car is ready." Though there are many dealerships on Market Street, Burns hopes Saturn will stand out with how it treats its customers.
"We give equal treatment to everyone, it doesn't matter if you're a lawyer or a college student," he noted.
The Saturn With a European Touch
The Saturn division of General Motors looked like it was overlooked in recent years by the Michigan-based car manufacturer. For the 2007 model year though, GM has increased its attention toward expanding the Saturn division. One concrete example is the Saturn Aura which is being marketed as an upscale midsize sedan. It replaced the highly unsuccessful Saturn L-Series.
For the 2007 model year, the Saturn Aura is designed to have more European car traits like its cousin - the Opel Vectra. While it shares its platform with the Chevy Malibu and the Pontiac G6, it is much closer to the Vectra than the two other American cars.
The Aura borrowed some of its design concepts from its sibling - the Saturn Sky. The headlight configuration which somehow looks oversized, the bulge in the hood, and the distinctly designed fenders bear resemblance to the Sky. These design concepts give the Aura a sporty look that is common on most European cars. The distinct nose is accented by the Saturn badge which complements the grille design.
Inside, the European inclination of the Aura is even more highlighted with its luxurious interior design and features. Saturn offers a “Premium Trim Package” which is consisted of leather seats, a steering wheel rim, and a shift knob. Saturn also offers an “Enhanced Convenience Package” which adds power-adjustable pedals. The combination of these further enhances the luxurious environment inside the Aura. In terms of driver-friendliness, the Aura sports well-lit and easily visible instrument panels. Entertainment is taken cared of an audio system which includes AM, FM and an optional XM Satellite Radio and a six-disc in-dash CD changer.
In terms of safety, the Saturn Aura is designed to have a built-in safety cage. This structure is integrated into the structure of the body of the Aura. Airbags for the front seats are dual-stage offering better protection to both driver and passenger. The Aura is also equipped with the GM Passenger-Sensing System which determines how to deploy the passenger airbags depending on the weight of the passenger which is a good safety feature for small children. It is also equipped with an electronic stability program and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. These safety features complements other components of the Aura like the Saturn water pump which ensures that the engine is kept at the right operating temperature.
In terms of engine, the Aura is available with three different engines. The first one is a 2.4-liter belt alternator starter hybrid powertrain which is fitted to the Aura Green Line or the hybrid version of the Aura. The drivetrain produces 164 horsepower and is mated to a four-speed transmission. The second engine choice is a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and can produce as much as 224 horsepower. The third engine choice is a 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of producing 252 horsepower and is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission which allows a manual gear shifting.
Saturn Introduces New Vue
General Motors’ effort to revitalize its import-fighting brand Saturn has seemingly paid off after the brand posted the highest sales increase among all automobile brands last month. For this year, sales are already 32 percent more than last year for the same period of time. The increasing popularity of the brand is in part due to their platform sharing with Opel. The German car brand is also owned by General Motors.
The working relationship between Opel and Saturn has led many to look at Saturn vehicles as the most European-looking American-branded autos in the market today. One of the most notable Saturn vehicles with the Opel bloodline is the convertible Saturn Sky - it is similar in design as the Opel GT. Aside from the Sky, a Saturn vehicle with the Opel influence will be released in the North American market this fall. In fact, the new vehicle is a rebadged version of the Opel Astra and will be called the Saturn Astra.
For now though, Saturn has introduced the 2008 model year version of the best-selling Saturn Vue. While being the best selling vehicle in Saturn's lineup, General Motors saw it fit to redesign the Vue based on the design of the Opel Antara SUV. The changes made by General Motors on the Vue made it look better than the previous version of the vehicle.
While based on the design of the Antara SUV, the new Vue does not look anything like an SUV. It looks like what it is, a crossover SUV. The auto industry got its first look at the 2008 Saturn Vue when it was unveiled at the 2007 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. But before that, a concept version of the new Vue was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.
The concept version of the 2008 Saturn Vue dubbed as the Saturn PreVue concept sports two doors. General Motors though announced that the production version of the midsize crossover SUV will have four doors.
In redesigning the Vue which is based on the Antara, the crossover’s angular body panel designs have been redesigned. The result is that the 2008 Saturn Vue has a more rounded profile than its predecessor which makes the new Vue look bigger than it actually is. On the inside, it is expected that Saturn will make the cockpit of the Saturn Vue more refined. From a possible new control panel design to the Saturn floor mats, it is expected that General Motors will give the cockpit of the new Vue a European car feel.
The standard engine for the 2008 Vue is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder Ecotec engine which can produce 169 horsepower. This engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. According to the manufacturer of the Vue, the base engine produces 29 more horsepower than the Antara. This engine is the same used on the Vue Green Line or the hybrid version of the crossover Vue.
Aside from the base engine, the Saturn Vue can also come with a 3.5-liter V6 engine which is capable of producing 222 horsepower. This powerplant is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Another engine choice for Vue buyers is a slightly bigger 3.6-liter V6 engine which is rated to produce 257 horsepower. This engine will be used by the XR trim line and the performance-oriented Vue Red Line. It will be available in fall this year along with the introduction of the Saturn Astra.
The Saturn brand in this year’s survey finished fifth among the 21 non-luxury brands in the United States auto market. Last year, the brand finished eighth. The brand trails Volkswagen, Nissan, GMC, and Honda brands in this year’s survey.
Recently though, the Detroit-based car manufacturer introduced new vehicles to Saturn’s lineup to attract and lure in more car buyers. Aside from the Aura, the Saturn Outlook, with its European styling and reliable parts such as Saturn spark plugs, is a concrete example of Saturn’s revitalized lineup. In the past, Saturn capitalized on their good customer relations but suffered from dwindling sales as their lineup did not offer much choices and options to consumers.
Instead of just relying on the dealership experience, which they have done for some time, Alexander Edwards says, “We're going to come out with products that are going to blow everybody away.” Alexander Edwards is the president of Strategic Vision Inc. The firm tapped 27,000 United States car buyers to get their views on the particular car brands that they have bought or are looking to buy the next time they need a car.
According to Kyle Johnson, the director of Saturn communications, the result of the survey reflects the findings of General Motors’ internal research on the Saturn brand. He added that they are “competing at a different level” with the release of their new lineup. Last year, they offered the Saturn Aura and the Saturn Sky and following the release of those cars, Saturn introduced the full size crossover SUV Saturn Outlook. Johnson pointed out the improvements that their current lineup has over their past models saying that: “The interiors have been refined, the handling improved and the body panels, which were dent-resistant plastic in the past, are now steel, allowing for better fits.”
The Saturn brand posted the highest increase in sale for the month of May. The brand posted an increase of 69 percent compared to last year’s May sales.
Improving Saturn Parts to Carry Its Vision for Green Cars Production
From the first initial slogan of Saturn’s “A different kind of company. A different kind of car”, it rocketed its way to popularity and recognition to most auto enthusiasts. The brief history of Saturn shows the reason why General Motors had undergone a business amalgamation of creating a wholly owned subsidiary. In a business view, wholly owned subsidiary means that the parent company still owns the common stock of the subsidiary. For Saturn, General Motors is still responsible for all the concerns in all its production. In fact, Saturn was the GM’s response to the growing popularity of Japanese small-car imports. GM made Saturn a vehicle that focuses more on American family needs, offering more comfort hence, alleviating the level of satisfaction by equipping improved Saturn Parts and features.
Today, the recent slogan of Saturn in the US is “Rethink”, a single word leaving “just something to think about” effect in introducing their latest five models since 2007. These models are lined-up with what is exclusively known as Saturn sub-line of vehicles?the Red-line or Green line. The Red Line having performance Saturn parts while the Green Line promoting a more environment friendly driving. The models for 2007 are the two Green Line hybrid models; the Vue SUV and Aura sedan and the three Red Line models namely the Sky roadster, Astra hatchback and Outlook crossover SUV.
One of the good things about Saturn’s upmarket is how it takes a firm position in offering green car types. Green cars are the vehicles that provide more fuel efficiency, making them less harmful to the environment. This is achieved by encouraging low emission targets. With this, Saturn has incorporated more efficient Saturn parts like the exhaust components. A hybrid car is an example of an economical car that Saturn is still developing with improved on-board conventional propulsion systems and electrically charged energy storage system.
While these developments are still ongoing, Saturn also focuses in introducing leading edge Saturn parts like the flexible plastic side panels. This polymer side panels are dent-resistant which greatly influence the stance of its vehicle’s look. Since Saturn also offers performance vehicles aside from the more popular Green Line for future vehicle, the company still promotes cutting edge engine design with advance performance making Saturn vehicle stand out from the rest.
Saturn Considers Smaller Car Offering
Last month, General Motors’ Saturn division posted the highest sales increase of all car manufacturers competing in the United States auto market. The division has been revitalized by General Motors as it continues to share platforms with Opel. The European attributes of Saturn's new cars has led to the revitalization of the brand.
As the demand for more fuel efficient cars increases, the brand is considering offering a smaller car in the United States auto market. Lisa Hutchinson, Saturn's product development director, recently expressed the division’s interest on developing and producing a small car in the near future. “We think there is definitely room at the bottom for an economy car for Saturn,” she said in an interview. “There is a growing interest in fuel economy as (gasoline) prices have gone up.”
Following the announcement, General Motors shares went up by 4.4 percent or $1.32 per share to $31 on the New York Stock Exchange. In the Dow Jones industrial average, the company posted the highest gain by climbing more than 157 points.
While it is clear that General Motors may be including a new small car to Saturn's lineup, Hutchinson did not mention when they would be offering the subcompact in the market. One candidate being viewed as the company’s new subcompact for the North American auto market is the Opel Corsa. The said subcompact model is considered as one of the most popular General Motors car models in Europe.
At the 2006 Paris Auto Show, General Motors’ Vice Chairman Bo Lutz announced that the Corsa will be introduced in the United States auto market as a Saturn vehicle. This announcement and the recent move by Saturn in sharing vehicles with Opel feed speculations that the Corsa will be offered in North America soon.
Other Saturn auto models which have benefited from Saturn and Opel’s working relationship are the Saturn Aura sedan and the SUV Outlook. Sales of Saturn vehicles in the United States have increased by as much as 30 percent during the first five months of the year as compared to 2006 for the same period. The step to introduce a subcompact in the North American market is an effect of the increasing demand for such vehicles. Sale of these small vehicles has increased by 43 percent as the price of gasoline continually increases.
General Motors already offers a subcompact car in the form of the Chevy Aveo. Its direct competitors include Toyota’s Yaris and Honda’s Fit. Currently, the smallest Saturn mud flap-equipped vehicle in General Motors’ growing division’s lineup is the Saturn Ion, which is a compact car. The Ion, itself, is on is way out as Saturn announced that come this fall, the Ion will be replaced by the Saturn Astra which is a rebadged Opel Astra.
“Those are a good vehicle to have in your lineup because they generate interest in the brand and showroom traffic,” says Jim Hossack, an analyst for AutoPacific Inc. “It's a reasonably good fit for Saturn, a good idea,” he added further.
The current lineup for Saturn includes the North America Car of the Year Aura, the Ion, the convertible Sky, the new Outlook, and the Relay minivan which the Outlook has replaced in the line up. The redesigned Saturn Vue is also part of General Motors’ division’s lineup.
Saturn Vue Receives Praise
The Saturn brand’s lineup has been revitalized by General Motors and the carmakers effort did not go unnoticed as the current lineup of the import fighting brand has been praised by many. In fact the redesigned Saturn Aura was named the 2007 North American Car of the Year earlier this year by automotive journalists. Another redesigned model in Saturn's lineup is the Saturn Vue.
The Vue also has its share of praises. Thanks to collaboration with German carmaker Opel, the new Vue is considered light-years away from its forerunner. In both styling and performance, the Saturn Vue is completely different from its best selling predecessor.
Car and Driver, the automotive enthusiast magazine has this to say about the new Vue: “Aside from the **** Sky roadster (re-badged as the Opel GT), the 2008 Vue (Opel Antara) may be the best-looking of the current Saturn lineup. The high-arcing roofline, the sporty beltline, and the thicker D-pillars compromise visibility a touch, but it's about style, man. Nobody chops the top on his '32 Ford five inches and then complains about visibility.”
The new Vue was designed with European styling which it needs to take on the likes of the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 for supremacy in their segment. The almost boxy Vue of the past gave way to a more rotund vehicle which makes it look bulky. The new headlight configuration complements the grille which in turn is accented by the Saturn badge.
With the crossover segment becoming more and more competitive and car buyers depending more and more on the web and publications for information regarding vehicles, favorable reviews will go a long way in promoting a particular vehicle.
Edmunds.com, the leading online source for automotive information has this to say about the redesigned Saturn Vue: “The 2008 Saturn Vue has the same 106.6-inch wheelbase as before, but it's a little wider and a little taller. More important, the curvaceous new bodywork has a clean, polished Euro-style look, especially in the Polar White of our test vehicle. Black side vents and dual stainless-steel exhaust tips add to its daring new persona.”
The Saturn Vue’s standard engine is a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with variable valve timing. This feature allows the engine to consume less fuel. The Ecotec engine can produce as much as 169 horsepower. For those who needs more power than what the small internal combustion engine offers, they can use Saturn cold air intake systems which are available in the market.
Aside from the 2.4-liter engine, General Motors also offers a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an output of 222 horsepower. Another engine choice is the slightly bigger 3.6-liter double overhead cam V6 engine with an output of 25 horsepower.
The 2008 Saturn Vue is being produced at General Motors’s assembly facility in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.
The Vue will be offered as a hybrid in the near future as the demand for environment friendly and fuel efficient vehicles increases. The hybrid Vue known as the Green Line uses General Motors’ mild hybrid powertrain. It essentially means that while the vehicle’s engine is supported by an electric motor, the electric motor cannot power the Vue alone. Although that may be the case, its fuel efficiency has also been praised in the automotive circle. Another plus for the Green Line is that it is priced relatively lower than hybrid vehicles in the market. The bottom-line of course is that the Vue Green Line is suited for those who wants a hybrid vehicle but does not want to shell out a fortune in buying one.
Audi, Mercedes, Saturn: Roadster Mania Continues
Driving is passion. And cars could dramatically alleviate the passion that drivers feel. And in today’s auto trend, one segment seems to captivate the soft spot of modern generation drivers, and that would be the roadsters.
According to Jason Harper of Bloomberg, if cars are all about freedom, and any 16-year-old dying to get out of the house would confirm that they are, then the two-seat roadster is the ultimate expression of that feeling.
“After all, what could be more divorced from humdrum practicality, and better suited to escape reality, than a convertible? Since a roadster is likely the second or even third car in your garage, how much should you spend for something that sees limited use? Do you lose out on the feeling if you spend too little, or even too much?” he added.
Harper noted, “At its best, a convertible is a simple machine, designed to let the driver taste the air while eating up the road, preferably on a hot day with an even hotter passenger. I've spent months testing different makes and models, looking specifically for the sweet spot between price and hair-mussing payoff.”
There are ample choices available in the auto industry. Different features, colors, and performance. But there are three roadsters that have dramatically captivated the desires of young drivers. Their score cars are consistently showing excellence.
The first roadster to make the Saturn thermostat temperature rise like erratic heartbeat is the Sky Red Line. When you check out the stats of the Saturn, 260 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque in a sexy-sleek two-seater package, with a starting price of $29,025, you just might wonder how you can afford not to have it in your garage, said Harper.
“My canary-yellow tester with black interior had options like 18-inch chrome wheels, leather seat insets and premium paint, and it was still only $31,029. I took the two-seater on the twisty back roads of the upper Hudson Valley with great expectations. After all, its less- powerful version, the base Sky, is decently fun if anemically powered. Saturn's solution was to strap a turbo onto a 2.0- liter, four-cylinder engine,” Harper noted.
Another breathtaking roaster is Audi TT. Earlier, the automaker has announced that the next-generation TT will be made of aluminum and would go into production this year. The car is constructed of aluminum in the front and steel in the rear to enhance its balance and is available in front- or all-wheel drive.
Also for 2008, a TT-S(S for Sport) and TT-RS (RS for Race Sport) are in the works. The variants are identical to the S4 and RS4 versions of the Audi A4. The automaker refreshed the roadster by flaunting attractive folds and crisp lines.
“When the 2.0T is coupled with the superb S Tronic six-speed automatic transmission, it's a blast to drive, especially if you just drop your foot on the gas pedal and hold it there. The 2.0T begins at $36,800; as tested, with upgraded leather and sound system, $41,425. The 3.2 with the S Tronic transmission has a base of $45,900 and quickly spirals above $50K with options,” said Harper.
The high-end Mercedes-Benz SL550 could not be removed from the list. The classic roadster has been around since the '50s. The car is not simple. “It has an aluminum hardtop that retracts in 16 seconds. The base price of $96,075 reflects that complicated nature. Still, it's a great-looking car, taking cues from the SLR McLaren: long, angled hood, with the cockpit sitting way back near the haunches. With the top up, you might not even know it's a convertible, even while,” concluded Harper.
Wider Range for Saturn
In the past, the Saturn brand has been viewed as a small-car company. With General Motors having brands such as Chevrolet and GMC producing large vehicles, it is of course practical that a certain brand be used a direct competitor to Asian car manufacturers having a near monopoly on the small car market in the country.
Looking at Saturn's lineup would suggest that it is indeed a small car producer. With the Saturn Sky convertible, the Aura sedan and the Ion compact car, Saturn's lineup seems to be focusing on smaller cars. But General Motors is revitalizing Saturn's lineup by introducing the Saturn Outlook.
The Outlook is the newest addition to Saturn's lineup. The midsize crossover SUV debuted earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show and has already received favorable reviews from auto journalists and critics. It was even ranked on two segments in the latest edition of Consumer Reports auto reviews.
The Outlook gave the Saturn brand a better diversity by offering large vehicles to consumers. Although not a full size SUV, the Outlook looks bulky with its rounded edges. Is exterior styling gave the Outlook a warm and welcoming look which complements Saturn's unparalleled customer service relation.
For its large size, the fact that the Outlook is a crossover is well manifested in the way it handles. Although a large vehicle, the Outlook uses a car platform which gives it car-like handling and sportiness. With an all-wheel drive configuration, the Outlook gives its occupants good ride comfort. It can also handle sharp curves with its suspension setting designed for a car.
Measuring 200.7 inches in length, the Outlook can adequately accommodate up to eight passengers. The Outlook is actually a seven-seater crossover SUV, but an optional seat can make the Outlook accommodate an eighth passenger. Being categorized as a midsize crossover and a large SUV, it is expected that the Outlook can adequately provide good legroom and headspace foe all its occupants.
The Outlook is available in two trim lines, the base XE and the top-of-the-line XR trim. With the Outlook XE, consumers will be treated with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with an output of 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line XR comes with a modified 3.6-liter V6 engine with an output of 275 horsepower and 251 pound foot of torque.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Outlook consumes a gallon of fuel after traveling 25 miles on highway speeds. The Outlook comes with a 22-gallon tank which means that with a full tank, one can cover 550 miles before needing a refuel. On city driving where frequent acceleration and deceleration are needed, the EPA gave the Outlook a 17 mpg rating. One consolation is that the Outlook can run on regular fuel unlike some vehicles which requires much expensive premium fuel.
The Outlook comes with reliable parts such as Saturn exhaust clamps, tailpipe, engine mounting bracket and the likes. It also comes with advanced features. One of these is the remote starting feature which allows the driver of the Outlook to start the vehicle remotely.
U.s. Route 422’s Saturn Bested County Dealers
Saturn of U.S. Route 422 in Niles bested among county dealers in new-vehicle sales in May with 115 title registrations. This and other related data were released in Monday by the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.
The dealership also bagged the highest post in May 2006 sales of 76 vehicles. The data showed that it being the top placer far left all other dealers behind.
The 115 sales were the highest among any other county dealer after Diane Sauer Chevrolet made 132 sales last September 2006.
Jim Pace Pontiac, Saturn’s neighbor and family member, grabbed the second spot in May sales with 71 sold new vehicles.
Generally speaking, as compared to last year, dealers overall marked their second straight month of better sales.
With 176 new and old vehicles sold, the Sweeney Buick Pontiac GMC bested among other dealers. The Sweeney Chevrolet followed shortly with 152 vehicles sold while the Greenwood Chevrolet Hummer followed next with 149.
Although Chevrolet’s sales this year went down from 706 in May 2006, the brand remained the most marketed marques in the area with 611 vehicles sold. Ford got the second spot with 247 vehicles compared to 298 last year. Pontiac ranked third with 205 vehicles – the only brand in the top three that had an increase from last year’s 147 sold vehicles.
The Cheveys got the top three vehicle sales ranks. It was led by the Trailblazer SUV with 133 sales versus last year’s 200 vehicles. The Impala at 129 with 76 last year followed as it ranked second while the Cobalt (the one built in Lordstown) ranked third at 126 compared to 129 a year ago.
Mike Capito, the sales manager of the Saturn new-car, commended the exerted rush efforts of the brand’s new lineup as well as the surge response to the customers’ growing concern over increasing gas prices. He pointed out that earlier this year the midsize Aura won Motor Trend’s North America Car of the Year while the two-seater Sky roadster pushes excitement into the lineup. The Vue has a new crossover utility vehicle for the 2008 year model. This is especially engineered for customers looking for a blend of sport utility vehicle and car.
Mr. Capito said that their company came out in 1991when they had one size car. And now, according to him, they already have a car that would meet every individual’s need.
He further said that Saturn is also benefiting from $3 per gallon of gasoline. But he was unsure about the Ion small car and Aura that both receive more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
He added that incentives are not playing a huge role in Saturn’s success. This is because although some interest financing offers are available, the brand sells vehicles at sticker price.
The Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio witnessed May sales in rise over last year for the second straight month. May sales are now 2,471 versus 2,247 in 2006. Dealers closed last year’s deficit of 11,180 to 11,053.
However, used sales declined from last year’s 3,628 to 983 vehicles this year. Sales starting January to May 2007 are off 19,008 to 21,596.
About Saturn Corporation
Saturn Corporation is a division of one of Detroit’s Big Three, General Motors. It is a brand of automobiles that was established on January 7, 1985 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of GM. It is active almost exclusively in the United States and Canada. In 1990, Saturn’s owner company began manufacturing the brand’s vehicles, which was as a response to the success of Japanese small-car imports in the United States.
Originally, Saturn’s motto was “A different kind of company, a different kind of car” from GM’s experiences acquired through its NUMMI and CAMI Automotive joint ventures. The mother company has organized the Saturn Corporation differently from their existing divisions with the attempt to compete with the Japanese management techniques. Workers would have more control at Saturn as well as involvement in the plant.
Maker of quality Saturn oxygen sensor, the Saturn Corporation has also established its own network from nothing, which was both independent and different from those used by veteran GM divisions. Instead of traditional automotive sales, the company put much focus on the quality of customer service, with insights gained from travel and hospitality as well as consumer retail industries.
The peculiarity of Saturn's distribution network was highlighted by referring to what would usually be called "dealers" as "retailers", and conversely "retail facilities" as regards "dealerships". The “retail facilities" served non-competing "market areas" which are known for not bargaining the price (the cars are sold at their exact sticker price), their sales environments with no pressure, and professional sales staff.
New Saturn Sky Is Heavenly
Time was when the automaker Saturn was just owned by General Motors. This wholly-owned set-up seems to have changed its course and today, it's a regular division and there is a lot of hype going around about its latest offering which will hit the road next year, that is in the spring of 2007. Towards the end of the last century, a series of cars began to roll out of this plant at Tennessee. The name was unusual and the cars that rolled out were quite unlike the usual GM offerings. This was a wholly-owned company but somehow managed to have an identity of its own, very different from its parent company's Detroit culture. Their "S" series of cars began to roll out of their showrooms pretty fast thanks to their pricing which made people want to go and buy. The cars were available in sedan, coupe and wagon models and they were compact, well-engineered and low-priced. They were primarily meant to stand up to the Japanese cars and the way they were taking over markets all over the world.
With time, the "S" series was phased out and in came the ION series as well as the "L" series. The ION series was compact while the "L" series was a larger car which was based on an Opel model and was later replaced by the RELAY, a crossover vehicle which was a 7-seater. Saturn also brought in the VUE which was an SUV which they still roll out today. However, it did not add up to enough to pose any competition worth its while to the other cars in the market.
Up till now. Today they have a car on the anvil that is already generating excitement though it is poised for roll-out only next spring. Why this hype? The car will be a two-seater roadster. Very much like the Honda S2000 Roadster, both in looks and size, Saturn Sky will come with a soft top that can be manually operated, 18" alloy wheels, leather bucket seats, a clamshell hood with a reverse opening and 4-wheel anti-locking brakes. The engine will be a 2.4 170hp I4 and it will come in both the 5-speed automatic transmission or manual options.
The price? It is expected to be high as it is a high-end product, with an up market target audience in mind. It is expected that around 12,000 will roll out a year and the price would be in the region of $25,000. Is this the beginning of a new road for Saturn? Till now, the image was that of a company that was low-priced, safe and possibly staid. New models seem to be on the anvil if reports are to be believed. All we can say is that the company seems to have jumped tracks somewhere along the way and seems to be heading into a new world with a new brand image to guide it along. In today's world, it could only be a harbinger of great things to come!
Saturn Ranks High On Dealer Service
As per the latest J.D. Power study which dwelt on satisfaction on dealer services, the Saturn brand of vehicles received high marks. This, of course, shows just how well Saturn makes sure that customers and Saturn followers do get the best kind of service when it comes to the products that they offer.
The study done by J.D. Power and Associates was just recently released. It actually measures car owner's satisfaction. And the study takes into the consideration those who visited the dealer's service department. The visit could be for a couple of reasons like repair activities or simple maintenance measures which could involve replacement of Saturn performance parts. The study also considers the fact that the visit done by Saturn owners would have to be done during the first three years of owning the Saturn vehicle.
After all the data were collected and analyzed, the statistics showed that the Saturn brand took the 7th spot. It is, indeed, a good ranking since the study took home data for thirty six vehicle brands and makes. The topmost spot was awarded to the Lexus luxury brand.
J.D. Power sent out a news release and in that document and announcement, the organization revealed that customers who found satisfaction with the services that they received during their visits to the dealers have a high chance of returning to the dealer for additional services. These customers could also be depended on when it comes to recommending the brand to other consumers. Aside from these, the satisfied customers would also be more or less be back to purchase the same brand or the same make of the vehicle they owned.
Saturn has already been creating vehicles for the market since 1990. Saturn S series and the L series are vehicles that are no longer in production. Currently produced vehicles include the Saturn ION, VUE, and Relay. Future Saturn cars include the Aura, Outlook, and Sky.
Make a Saturn Shine on the Road
Saturn Automobile, a car brand exclusively launched by the automaker giant General Motors in 1990, has long impressed car enthusiasts with the satisfactory performance it delivers. This can be attributed to the several Saturn parts of unparalleled quality that make up the heavenly Saturn vehicle.
Known as an environmentally conscious automaker since its establishment, Saturn has ensured that all its manufacturing processes are aimed at protecting the environment. This even started many years before the invention of the hybrid vehicles and when auto engineers were still on the initial stage of researching alternative fuels. Saturn was on innovative usage of flexible plastics for some Saturn parts like the side panels to avoid minor dents; until it recently announced that it would discontinue this procedure.
However, Saturn promised that it would keep on incorporating features of the latest technology in all model line-ups. These would include the L-Series, S-Series, VUE SUV, ION compact car, Sky roadster, and many more. Saturn parts like the engine, transmission, braking components, chassis, wheels, seats, hoods, fenders, and others would remain exclusive to specific models to maintain their uniqueness. This would also provide customers with a wide selection to choose from.
If car owners should decide to replace old or worn-out Saturn parts or simply to upgrade to innovative ones, auto parts online retailers could easily be accessed at one’s convenience. Purchasing products on the internet has been proven to be most practical especially among busy consumers as this could save a lot of money, time, and effort. Most commercial websites could be considered trustworthy as they sell only genuine Saturn parts and accessories at reasonable prices. Many great deals could be definitely found online as long as one would be so much willing to take time to research and compare all information that could be gathered.
Saturn New Practices Fall Flat
The Saturn car is a product line of General Motors that was started in 1985. Plans for this division of General Motors were two fold. The first was to compete with small car imports from other countries. General Motors heavily marketed Saturn as “a new kind of car”. The car itself was not so new but the method of purchase certainly was. As anyone who has bought a new car knows, it is all about negotiation. You go in you tell the salesperson how much you are willing to pay and he comes back and tells you how much the dealership will take. This haggling goes back and forth until either a sum agreeable to both parties is reached or one of you walks away. Saturn promised to do away with what some Americans found to be a very difficult process. The claim was that Saturn cars were priced so economically that no haggling was necessary, the customer was already getting a great deal so there was no room to dicker over price. The customer was expected to pay the priced ask just as he/she would do for other items purchased. While that sounds easy enough, several unforeseen factors came up. The first was quite unexpected, but it turned out that most people buying a new car “expected, wanted and liked” the bargaining that goes back and forth at most dealerships. Many buyers stated that they did not believe the company would offer the best price initially and many would be customers went to dealerships that did have negotiable prices. The practice soon ended a Saturn dealerships became arbitration dealerships just like most other new car dealers.
One the negotiation process was settled, it appeared that General Motors had found another great design and the public responded quite well to Saturn. The cars were unique in appearance and all were given names in relation to astronomical terminology. Initially they were given letter sequence names such as the Saturn L-Series, the S-Series and so on. These were not nearly as popular as the astronomical names proved to be. Soon names such as the Saturn Vue, the Saturn Sky and the Saturn Aura were given to the vehicles and sales did increase somewhat.
The designers for the Saturn’s gave the cars dent-resistant plastic body panes, which were supposed to allow the company to change the look of the vehicles easily. This was never fully implemented in practice however.
Recent years have been very unkind to most car companies and Saturn has been no exception. Sales began to decline steadily and by 2008, Saturn’s parent company, General Motors was looking to the United States government for help with its serious financial difficulties. In order to get approval for this government aid, General Motors has had to cut costs across the board. Saturn was placed on the chopping block. In December of 2008, General Motors appeared before congress to ask for aid. In exchange for help, it promised to slash operating costs to the bone. So it was that On February 17, 2009 General Motors chairman Rick Wagoner announced that Saturn would be put up for sale, if no buyer is found for the car line then General Motors will phase Saturn out no later than 2012.

Livin’ Large in Saturn’s Outlook Crossover
Enter the 2007 Saturn Outlook: A sleek, stylish and accommodating crossover SUV that feeds the needs for the big and husky as well as garners admiring approval from the artificially sweet and thin.
Hopping into this Saturn is much easier than jumping into a comparably super-sized SUV. By using car-like construction for the Outlook's body, Saturn lowered the floor, so it's just one step to climb aboard. Many eight-person SUVs need running boards and a rope ladder to pull yourself up. The Outlook's lower entrance height also could help save parents' backs -- their kids may not need assistance to climb into an Outlook.
Sliding behind the wheel, I felt as satisfied as my third turn at the buffet. The seats are comfortable and the instruments are well laid out. The dials and buttons are easy to reach, turn or push. The dash wasn't overbearing or intimidating. It is pushed down and away from the driver, making it feel more car-like. The lines are graceful and the faux wood trim tastefully accents components throughout. Its overall appearance is understated and well made.
During any given week, I may drive a number of much more expensive vehicles than the $35,000 Outlook (yes, a tough job that I love). But whenever I moved from a plush, pricey sedan back to the Outlook, I never felt like I was stepping down to a humdrum family hauler.
GM's Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has said the carmaker is in the midst of an interior overhaul. The Outlook is among the most recent examples of fresh, plush interiors that show significant improvements over models only a few years ago.
The second and third rows are comfortable and offer lots of space. The optional second-row captain chairs, which I prefer over bench seats, are very accommodating for U.S.-sized adults, and they articulate forward to provide easy access into the third row. The additional space allows those climbing into the back seat the ability to simply step toward the back row instead of crawling over a folded seat head first, leaving all the world to see a new moon rising.
The folding system, called Smart Slide by GM, is so easy to use, I could flip the seat up with one hand and never let go of my double cheeseburger.
Even the third row offers a big bench seat where I could comfortably sit. While I would be hard-pressed to wedge three of my big-boned family members into that row, two adults could easily relax back there without needing a marriage license.
Furthermore, the Outlook's third row can disappear, folding flat to offer more storage space. The second row, which can also come as a 60/40 splitting bench seat, can fold flat. With both rows down, the Outlook has 117 cubic feet of space -- enough to carry a weekend's worth of Home Depot projects.
When the third-row craze arrived for automakers, it seemed more of a cosmetic addition than a useful one. Take good storage space and stuff it with a useless third row that hardly fits a pair of Ken and Barbie dolls, much less real people, was the philosophy for many carmakers. Kids loved them, but not big kids, and certainly not adults.
A good Outlook
The Outlook may be big inside, but it drives like a much smaller vehicle.
Powered by GM's 3.6-liter aluminum block engines, it accelerates quickly and smoothly through its six-speed transmission. Even when driving 70 mph, it had enough pep left to easily pass those annoying gravel trucks along Interstate 75 that pepper everyone with paint-chipping pebbles. While I didn't get a chance to test the Outlook's towing abilities, Saturn claims it can pull up to 4,500 pounds.
The engine pushes 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque with a single exhaust and 275 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque with a double exhaust. The new Hydra-Matic transmission provides better gas mileage than a four-speed, another important consideration in a family hauler. While American families may have healthy appetites, their vehicles shouldn't.
The single exhaust engine gets 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The dual exhaust engine gets 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
The Outlook's smooth ride is a product of its long 118.9-inch wheelbase, 18-inch tires and independent front and rear suspension. Its variable speed rack-and-pinion steering lets you feel the road while on the highway or around town as it adjusts to the vehicle's speed. Go faster, the steering becomes tight, slow down and it loosens up.
Typically, driving big SUVs and trucks somehow brings out the aggressive driver in us all. Perhaps it was the car-like feel that caused the Outlook to never feed my road rage. When I passed that gravel truck, I smiled and waved all five fingers instead of one.
Surprisingly, the Outlook wears its weight, all 4,936 pounds in the all-wheel drive model, well.
While its shape is SUV boxy, it defies the stereotype because of its low-riding body. It looks more like a sports ute than a wagon on steroids -- the other common version of large crossovers.
Designers drew long clean lines along its body, stretching its look.
Its flared fenders add to an aggressive stance and the face is the new look of Saturn -- shiny mouth-like grille and sparkling headlamps, first shown on the Saturn Sky roadster. A few cues, such as the glass wrapping around the back corner of the wagon, add a dash of panache.
One of the best things about this crossover is how it redefines a confusing segment.
The Outlook is not a car and it's not an SUV, despite GM calling it one. It's designed for those who need to move a family or two around town or on vacation. It's spacious, versatile and fun to drive.
And that's not a bad Outlook.
2008 Saturn Vue Pricing Announced
General Motors’ fastest growing brand Saturn recently announced the pricing for the 2008 Saturn Vue. The redesigned midsize crossover SUV is one of the latest efforts by General Motors to revitalize its Saturn brand. Last month, the brand posted the highest sales increase in terms of percentage of all automotive brands in the United States auto market.
The 2008 model year version of the Saturn Vue will have a starting price of $26,990. That is $3,425 more than the 2007 Saturn Vue which was introduced in the market at a price of $23,565. Despite the increase in price, the Saturn Vue is expected to gain attention from auto buyers, thanks to its redesign. The new Vue, according to General Motors, is equipped with many standard features as well as driving-oriented technologies. The styling of the redesigned Vue is also a strong selling point for the auto model.
In terms of safety, the 2008 Vue will be equipped with a complete lineup of airbags. Front, front seat side and side curtain airbags come as standard features for the 2008 Vue. Seat belt pretensioners, disengaging collapsible pedals, active head restraints are also thrown in as added safety features for the 2008 Vue. The new Vue will also be equipped with General Motors’ StabiliTrak electronic stability control system. An electronic Trailer Sway Control feature also comes with the newest Vue.
Three engines are offered with the Vue - all come with Saturn oxygen sensors. A 2.4-liter Ecotec engine will be used on the base FWD version of the Vue. The said engine will be mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The AWD XE variant of the Vue will be using a 3.5-liter V6 engine. The said V6 can produce as much as 222 horsepower and 219 lb-ft of torque.
For the XR and Red Line variants of the Vue, General Motors’ direct overhead camshaft 3.6-liter V6 engine will be used. This improved V6 can produce 257 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. Aside from these three engines, the Vue will also be offered as a hybrid which will use General Motors’ two-mode hybrid technology.
Aside from the announcement of the pricing for the 2008 Saturn Vue, the company also reported that they are thinking about injecting their current lineup with smaller and more fuel efficient cars. “We think there is definitely room at the bottom for an economy car for Saturn,” says Lisa Hutchinson, Saturn's director for product development. “There is a growing interest in fuel economy as prices have gone up,” she added in an interview with Bloomberg in New York.
Currently, the brand’s smallest car is the Saturn Ion. Aside from the Ion, Saturn’s lineup includes the convertible Saturn Sky, the midsize sedan Saturn Aura, the redesigned Saturn Vue, the outgoing minivan Saturn Relay and the new premium midsize crossover SUV Outlook. While, it is apparent that Saturn will be producing small cars for the United States auto market, the company declined to reveal when they will be introducing the small car. What the company announced though is that the new Saturn Astra will be available by fall this year. It will be a rebadged Opel Astra and it was first seen at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year.
Beating Other Brands With Saturn Parts
Known to be GM’s only green car provider, Saturn has moved up a few steps on sales like with Europe’s Opel and UK’s Vauxhall. Though market is limited to the US and Canada, Saturn is pursued to increase in popularity even in other countries. Saturn, a division of the mega auto company, the General Motors, was established as answer to the growing demand of Americans to Japanese cars way back in the 80’s. Today, with its increased production, Saturn parts are also sought to amplify in terms of numbers to counter the needs for replacement parts.
When the first car ever marketed under the name Saturn had reached the number of expected sales in 1990, the company decided to further step forward, pushing its brand to the mainstream. Thanks to Alex C. Mair and his colleagues, who conceptualized the Saturn, now, the vehicle has served over a million of people from Canada and the US. In 1997, when the car production of Saturn reached 1.5 million and distribution has reached Japan, Saturn parts production has intensified to meet all demands from the clients.
Saturn has five major models that are on sale this year and two Green Line Hybrid cars. The five are named as the Astra, Sky, Aura, VUE and Outlook. The two hybrid cars are a version of the VUE and the Aura. Saturn Green Line hybrid vehicles are EPA (Environment Protection Agency) approved. They make use of fuel efficient Saturn parts that help lower fuel consumption. This two featured cars of Saturn makes the company highly competitive with Japanese cars.
With the best parts that only Saturn can offer, consumers will be inclined to buy such an amazing car than to stick on expensive and uneconomical ones. In over 16 years of producing topnotch automobiles, Saturn has already manufactured over a million of Saturn parts, distributed in strategic outlets across the country and abroad to meet the needs of their clients for replacement parts. In the coming years, Saturn is planning to release further innovative models in terms of technology and design. They are working on the new breed of the VUE Hybrid Line?the Flextreme Plug-in concept car. No doubt that in no time, Saturn will lead the world to pause and rethink.
The powerplant is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a power output of 237 hp.
According to General Motors, the Saturn Astra will replace the Saturn ION in Saturn's lineup. The Astra will join the redesigned Aura, the Vue, the all-new Outlook and the convertible Saturn Sky in Saturn's 2008 model year lineup.
